It's essential for our #foodsecurity and our #economy that we have healthy and resilient supply chains where retailers engage constructively with suppliers, otherwise we'll all suffer when choice is impacted. It was good to hear Mark White at the Groceries Code Adjudicator on BBC News R4 this morning saying that he had not seen suppliers using inflation to boost their profits. Actually, these scenes have been filmed around the town of Sinaia, in Prahova County. But the location of the shooting is in fact quite different from the setting given in the story. It's sobering too to see the latest Begbies Traynor Group Red Flag alert report, published today, registering a 36% increase in the number of companies (across all sectors) rated as being in “critical financial distress”. Unable to pass all their costs on, some companies are struggling to make ends meet - and this is evidenced in the rate of food and drink business failures that we saw in 2022, which look to have doubled on the rate in 2019. But they've faced huge rises over the past 18 months in #energy, ingredient, packaging, transport, labour and borrowing costs as #inflation - driven by #covid19, the #warinukraine, #brexit costs and #extremeweather - has bitten. Producers are very mindful of the responsibility they have, alongside others, to keep food and drink affordable (and note that it's retailers that set prices, not suppliers).
